Starsinger/ Mothertongue – Music DRAFTS in -progress

Music – scores, mockups and workshop audio
Links in red

Alap – Prologue

Score accurate to the video below, recorded at workshop #2. Currently under (very minor) revision

Workshop audio: Strings are too quiet in this, they will be more present once amplified. There is also a missing soundeffect right at the end when the first Starquake is heard.

Act 1 Sc 1 – Memory

Score – to be workshopped

I’m waiting for some audio gear to arrive after the fire. Once it’s here I’ll make a MIDI mockup of Memory and upload here.

Act 1 Sc 2 – Rage

Score (as used for workshop #2), accurate to the recording except as detailed below. Some revisions to be done.

Workshop audio: The initial screams will have more processing on them. Some electronics missing through the run (especially in the second half), others needing some revision. Intonation gets really iffy in the second half, that will be cleaner in practice with louder strings and electronics supporting pitches. I’m completely rewriting the ending.

Act 2 Sc 1 – Loneliness

The audio for this scene is incomplete. Excerpts below, this has been slightly revised since the workshop audio was recorded, but the overall soundworld is unchanged.

Score (as used in workshop 1 and accurate to the audio below, has been slightly revised since)

Excerpt 1 – mm 3 – 58 (ish)

Excerpt 2 – mm266 – 376

Excerpt 3 mm 376 – end of scene

Transition in 3 parts as Mina descends into Death Above – Between – Below

[I’ll upload here as soon as my MIDI equipment arrives and I can mock this up]
This is a revision after Workshop#1. This is all in electronics, the section lengths can be adjusted anywhere from 2 mins to 6 mins to accommodate the scene change from Loneliness into Death.

Score for Transition in 3 parts

Act 2 Sc 2 – Death (beginning -mm414)

First few measures missing. Basic structure and music is unchanged, but this is being edited for Mina’s part, to create a breakdown from singing (connection) to speaking (separation).

Act 2 Sc 2 Death (mm414) – Epilogue

The opening of this section, where Mina breathes in fear and the space reflects and amplified the breaths back at her – is being rewritten. Same overall gestures and shape, but creating a tighter interplay between the sounds she makes and what’s in electronics, and making the electronic soundscape feel larger and more immersive. (It’s also- especially electronics – far too quiet in the recorded audio)
Epilogue: Need to record children’s voices singing the song so they can be integrated in Mina and the spirits. Possibly considering a reprise of the “mothers, daughter, an eternal chain of voices…” fragment from the prologue.

Score – Death – Epilogue (accurate to recordings above) Has been slightly revised since
