The choral works below, written in discussion with choral conductors during Covid, are all created so that they:
• Can be rehearsed and performed with a chorus in real time over the Internet.
• Require no special technology (beyond video conferencing software)
• Are customizable for various levels of singers, and to focus on particular vocal techniques. They may also be used as composition exercises with the choir prior to rehearsal.
Customizable Choral Games
This packet includes four templates with directions on creating your own piece that can be performed over video conferencing software. These can be done either by the conductor, as a group exercise with your choir, or even as a homework assignment where singers each create a piece by following directions, and then in a synchronous session the choir reads through the music.
Game of Drones is a ready-to-use game in two parts, using the same basic outline as the customizable games above, but playing in a very simple way with glissandi, ornamentation and motivic gestures from a traditional Indian raag. The vocal techniques used here may give some additional ideas for techniques that may be developed in the customizable games above.
The sample recording below uses the easiest (but lower quality) of two recording approaches detailed at the bottom of this page.
Alone Together, for four part SATB chorus, features the same aleatoric approach as the other games but includes harmonic movement. The sample recording below uses the easiest (but lower quality) of the two recording approaches detailed at the bottom of this page.
